Boat and ATV Insurance on the Eastern Shore: What Your Auto Policy Doesn't Cover
Genna Murphy
Most personal auto insurance policies specifically exclude boats, ATVs, and personal watercraft. A separate policy is required for each, and going without one leaves both the vehicle and any liability exposure completely uncovered. If you own a boat on the Chesapeake Bay, ride an ATV on your property, or keep a motorcycle in the garage, you need coverage that your auto policy is not providing. Bradley Atlantic Insurance Management helps recreational vehicle owners across the Eastern Shore, Harford County, and Worcester County get the right protection in place.
What Your Auto Policy Leaves Out
It is a common assumption — and a costly one. Many Eastern Shore residents believe their personal auto policy extends some coverage to their boat, ATV, or personal watercraft. It does not.
Standard personal auto policies are written specifically for road vehicles. Boats, ATVs, jet skis, and similar recreational vehicles are explicitly excluded. If your boat is damaged in a storm, stolen from your dock, or involved in an accident on the water, your auto policy will not respond. Neither will it cover any liability claim that results from an incident involving those vehicles.
That gap is real, and it catches people off guard when a claim happens.
The Recreational Landscape of Rural Maryland
This matters especially on the Eastern Shore and in surrounding counties because recreational vehicle ownership is simply part of life here.
Watercraft use on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries is widespread — from small fishing boats in Cecil County to larger vessels kept near Berlin and Ocean City in Worcester County. ATV use on rural properties throughout the Shore is common, as is motorcycle ownership in areas like Harford County where scenic back roads make riding genuinely enjoyable.
That means a large portion of households in this region are carrying recreational assets that are either uninsured or significantly underinsured. Most of the time nothing happens. When something does, the financial consequences can be serious.
Key Coverages for Boats and Watercraft
A boat or personal watercraft policy covers several things your auto policy never will:
- Physical damage — covers the hull, motor, and equipment if your boat is damaged in an accident, by a storm, or through theft
- Liability — covers bodily injury and property damage you cause to others while operating the vessel
- Uninsured/underinsured watercraft — covers you if you are in an accident caused by another boater who has no insurance or inadequate coverage
- Medical payments — covers injuries to you and your passengers regardless of fault
On the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, liability coverage is particularly important. Boating accidents can involve serious injuries, significant property damage, and legal costs that add up quickly.
ATV and Off-Road Vehicle Coverage
ATV insurance works similarly. If you ride on your own property, have guests or family members riding, or ever venture onto trails or shared land, the liability exposure alone makes coverage worth carrying.
Physical damage coverage protects your ATV if it is damaged in an accident or stolen. Liability coverage matters if someone is injured while riding your machine or as a result of your operation of it. For Eastern Shore landowners who allow others to ride on their property, that exposure is real and often overlooked.
Motorcycles and Seasonal Coverage
Motorcycle owners in Harford County and Worcester County often ride only part of the year, which raises a reasonable question about whether year-round coverage makes sense.
It does — but Erie Insurance offers seasonal lay-up discounts for motorcycles and boats that are stored and not in use during winter months. You can maintain continuous coverage, keep your vehicle protected while in storage, and reduce your premium during the off-season. It is a practical option for riders and boaters who do not want to pay full rates twelve months a year but also do not want to leave their vehicle uninsured.
Do Not Assume Your Homeowners Policy Covers It Either
Some property owners assume their homeowners policy provides some coverage for boats or ATVs kept on their property. Coverage under a homeowners policy for watercraft and recreational vehicles is extremely limited — typically capped at very low dollar amounts and carrying significant restrictions. It is not a substitute for a dedicated recreational vehicle policy.
